State Bank Museum & Art Gallery is situated in the premises of State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) main building.
This Museum is one of the museums in Pakistan. It is brownstones building with huge columns flanking the columns. The main motive of this building is to collect historical materials that would increase the people know about the money and monetary system from old to modern times.
The idea of this museum was proposed in the year 2006 by Dr. Ishrat Hussain (governor of SBP at that time). This museum is inaugurated by Dr. Ishrat Hussain on July 1st, 2011. State bank of Pakistan museum is distributed into many different galleries, such as stamps gallery, coins galleries, currency gallery, SBP history and art gallery. In the main hall of the museum, there is a big LCD screen to give the visual tour of the museum. SBP officials are also available there to give you the complete tour of the museum.
The museum consists of a Governor’s gallery which consists of the furniture used by the first Governor of SBP, Zahid Hussain. It also consists of a photograph of Quaid-e-Azam inaugurating former building of State Bank of Pakistan. There are two coin galleries; one consists of coins from pre-Islamic times while the other gallery exhibits the coins from the time of early Arab rulers of the subcontinent. Coins galleries also consist of coins of Indian states. The Stamp and Currency galleries are very inspiring one.
The SBP history gallery has the record of SBP’s establishment including the principal General Ledger of the Bank written in 1948. Close to the exit of this gallery, there displays the first Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of Pakistan installed at Habib Bank in 1988. The Art gallery of SBP is also known as Sadequain Gallery, encloses amazing pieces of art that really catches the eyes. It also consists of a portion that displays the art of younger local artist.
