Frere Hall is located in Saddar Town, Karachi. This building is one of the oldest buildings of Karachi. The building was established by British when British rule the subcontinent. The construction of this building started in 1863 and the Frere hall was completely constructed by the year 1865. In the era of British rule, Frere Hall was served as a Town Hall and was the hub of Karachi’s cultural activities.
This building is created very beautifully with red and grey sandstone from Jungshahi. Frere house now a house of library as well as an art gallery. The ground floor of Frere hall houses a huge library. This library is one of the largest libraries of Karachi. Frere house library is known as Liaquat National Library. This library was given this name after Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. This library contains a huge collection of different types of books along with dictionaries, atlases, newspapers and technical books. The upper floor of Frere Hall serves as an Art gallery. Art gallery of Frere house is full of paintings of Pakistan’s ionic artist Sadequain. Not only art lovers but also a common man with no knowledge of art enjoys visiting this art gallery.
On every Sunday there is a book bazaar on county yard where one can buy old books. If you visit Frere hall on Sunday, you will find it very crowded because of this Sunday Book Bazaar. There are two beautiful lawns around the Frere Hall which were originally known as ‘King’s Lawn’ and ‘Queen’s Lawn’ but after independence; their names are changed to Bagh-e-Jinnah.
