The Salt Range lies between the valleys of the Indus and Jhelum rivers in the Punjab province of Pakistan.The range has a length of about 175 km and its highest point is Sakesar which is approximately 1,600 m. The areas has rich ecological and historical heritage. Within the Salt Range lies Takh –e- Babari (the Seat of Emperor Babar), passage of Alexender the Great and Shrine of the grandson of Muslim Saint Abdul Qadir Gilani, templese.g Katas and fort such as Rohtas, Malot, Kafirkot.
The vegetation is predominately of Acacia modesta and Capparis aphylla. Capparis is known for its medicinal properties and ecologically helps in protecting soil from erosion. There are other species such as wild olive trees, sheesham, zizypus (ber) etc. The Salt Range has areas rich in biodiversity and has a number of protected areas. The Range has one National Park (Chinji), five game reserves (Namal Lake, Ucchali Lake, KallarKahar, Diljabba-Domeli, Rasool Barrage) additional one private Game Reserve named Kalabagh) and five wildlife sanctuaries (ChumbiSurla, Jahlar Lake, Sodhi, Khabekki Lake and KundalRakh). Some of these protected areas areas such as Ucchali, Jahlar and Khabbeki lakes are also international recognized under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, 1971, because these provide important habitat to a wide variety of waterfowl species. There are protected forests within the Salt Range some examples are Simli Reserved Forest and Noorpur Reserved Forest.
